Not your mother’s stockings: Brookline native gives fashionistas a leg up – News – Milford Daily News

VienneMilano describes itself as the first luxury hosiery brand and online boutique dedicated to thigh-highs, over-the-knee and knee-high socks.

QUINCY – With her luxury hosiery brand, Vienne Cheung Brown helps people find stockings that will have them raving — and not just because they snagged them on something sharp.

Raised in Brookline, Brown specializes in luxury hosiery imported from Italy and sold at her business, VienneMilano in Quincy.

The products are near and dear to Brown who, fed up with the available options, decided to open her own business in 2011.

“At the time, I worked in corporate America and I couldn’t find thigh-high stockings that would stay up on my leg. Everything was either only for costume wear, or they were just really, really expensive,” she recalled. “And as someone who really likes to wear nice stockings, I thought this must be a challenge that other women faced as well.”

VienneMilano describes itself as the first luxury hosiery brand and online boutique dedicated to thigh-highs, over-the-knee and knee-high socks.

“Our pitch is often the quality. Personally, I purchased stockings from drug stores many, many years ago and you can feel the quality and the material is not comfortable. It comes down to the material,” she said.

Cheaper stockings typically go heavy on the nylon, but VienneMilano blends its stockings with spandex, or sometimes silk.

“So as a result, the material that we use and the stockings that we produce tend to be softer, smoother and more comfortable — and more durable, too,” Brown said.

And thigh-highs accommodate a wide variety of heights, shapes and sizes, she said.

“I’m not not the tallest woman in the world … and I find traditional stockings, they’re uncomfortable. They often don’t fit, whereas thigh-highs are a little bit more versatile,” she said. “And whether you’re 6-foot-2 — and we have customers who are — or you’re even more petite than I am, they fit.”

Thigh-highs can also be empowering and flattering, according to Brown.

“There’s just something about it that I feel like it makes a woman feel a little bit more confident when they wear thigh-highs,” she said.

But it can sometimes be difficult to find a pair that will stay up.

“I’ll tell you, the number one question that we always get is, ‘Do your thigh-highs stay up?’ And the answer is yes,” she said, adding that the stockings have a band of silicone on the inside of the tops to help them stay in place.

And for customers looking for more sustainable fashion, VienneMilano just launched eco-friendly stockings made from recycled polyamide.

This is just the beginning — the company is also looking into the possibility of using a biodegradable material, although Brown said that will take a bit more testing and experimentation.

At the end of the day, these are not your mother’s drugstore stockings; the idea is that “high-quality stockings are products that are more sustainable than something that you dispose of easily,” Brown said.

“There’s a lot of fast fashion and a lot of times consumers buy products, they wear it a number of times, and then they throw it away. I don’t necessarily believe that that should be the way,” she said. “That’s why for us, we always believe in producing high-quality stockings that last.”
